What to Look for in a MIG Welder

Dual-voltage (MVP/multi-voltage) machines run on either circuit, which is convenient if you work in different locations.

Duty cycle determines how long you can weld continuously. Production shops need 60%+ at rated output. Home shops can get by with 20-30%. Manufacturers rate duty cycle at specific amperages, so compare ratings at the same output level.

Wire feed system quality varies dramatically between price points. Industrial machines use cast aluminum drive systems with precision tension adjustment. Budget machines use plastic housings that wear faster. The drive system directly affects arc stability, especially with softer wires like aluminum.

Spool gun port matters if you plan to weld aluminum. Not all MIG welders have one. Check before you buy if aluminum is on your list. Adding a spool gun later typically costs $250-400.
